Implanter-Assisted Placement (Often Called DHI)

FUE describes how hair grafts are taken from the donor area. DHI is a commonly used term for placing those grafts with a specialised implanter pen, such as a Choi pen. It describes a graft placement technique used during an FUE hair transplant.

At Monarch Hair Transplant Clinic, the doctor performs DHI graft placement using an implanter pen. The recommended approach depends on your hair loss, donor area, existing hair and treatment plan.

How does implanter-assisted placement work?

After grafts are taken from the donor area using FUE, they are placed into the recipient area. The implanter pen holds a graft during placement and allows the doctor to position it according to the planned angle, direction and depth.

With a sharp implanter, creating the recipient opening and placing the graft can happen in the same movement. Other placement approaches use recipient sites prepared beforehand. The doctor will decide which approach is appropriate for your procedure.

How does it differ from other FUE procedures?

Both approaches use FUE to harvest grafts. The difference is how the grafts are placed:

  • ✓ Forceps placement: Grafts are placed into recipient sites using forceps.
  • ✓ Implanter-assisted placement: Grafts are loaded into a pen and placed using that instrument. Depending on the pen and technique, the recipient opening may be made during placement or prepared beforehand.

The implanter pen is a placement tool. It does not guarantee a denser result, less trauma, faster healing or better hair growth.

Who might be suitable?

Implanter-assisted placement may be considered for different treatment areas, including the hairline, temples and frontal scalp. Suitability depends on an individual assessment of the donor area, recipient area and treatment goals.

Some patients may be suitable for an unshaven or partially shaved procedure. The implanter pen alone does not determine whether shaving can be avoided; this depends on the surgical plan.

Afro-textured or curly hair is assessed individually. Hair texture alone does not determine which placement technique is best.
